Reek Minds: Eternal Reek 7″

Description

Continuing right where they left off, REEK MINDS bring us this short ripper of disgusting depraved hardcore. Six blasts of fast maniacal shredding to punch a hole in your wall to. Tighter than ever. Really awesome guitar leads bringing to mind ALIENATOR, who they actually share members with. Tyler sounds like a man who just crawled out of a dumpster in a dark alley, beat the shit out of some asshole, and grabbed a mic to vomit his hatred on to our undeserving eardrums. This shit is about as hardcore punk as it gets. Dont worry, there are also enough breakdowns to stomp around your bedroom and break shit to as well. In a world that has been progressively getting worse and worse over the last 8 years, at least weve had REEK MINDS (with this being their fourth vinyl release in that time frame) continuing with a vengeance as our collective soundtrack to everything that is completely fucked. The catharsis we need in this timeline is real with REEK MINDS, and it fucking hits hard.

Our take: We named Reek Minds last recordtheir Malignant Existence LP on Iron LungRecord of the Week, and this new EP (which finds them moving to their hometown label Black Water) is even better! If youre already a Reek Minds fan, this is a no-brainer since everything you loved about the band is still here: the performance is super energetic, the production is heavy and crisp, the riffs and guitar leads are blazing, and the vocalist still oozes charisma, with an articulated growl that sounds like a death metal-informed Jerry A. Where I think Eternal Reek bests Reek Minds previous records is in the increased variety of tempos and rhythms. Theyre still pretty much always ripping fast, but they really shake things up with these crazy whiplash changes in rhythm. Theyll be charging along at a groovy, Poison Idea-esque tempo, then out of nowhere theyll drop into their trademark super fast scissor beat / blast, or vice versa, and every time they execute one of these changes I swear I feel weightless for a split-second. Those scissor beat parts are so wild the drummer lays into the snare so hard that it almost sounds like the beat is turned around backwards, which makes it even more thrilling when they snap back into the pocket with a groovier punk beat. With six songs in nine minutes, the thrill ride doesnt let up for a single second.
