After giving metal fans a NWOBHM-inspired case of whiplash on 1983 debut Kill Em All, Metallica grew into absolute thrash titans with the following years Ride the Lightning. The bands sophomore LP remains a jolting thrill-ride, increasing the speed and aggression when necessary (Fight Fire with Fire) while also leaning into dangerously bass-forward stomp-outs (For Whom the Bell Tolls) and forever banging anthems (Fade to Black). Its the album where Metallica truly becomes Tallica, and stands not just as a pivotal moment for the band but for thrash as a whole.
