Verotik is an independent comic book publisher founded in the mid-1990s byGlenn Danzig, singer of horror punk band The Misfits. The comics, with titles likeSatanika,Venus Domina, andAkuma-She,were different than anything else being published at the time, with high quality art and stories full of sex and violence and a lack of superheroes. At the time, they were derided by the industry and they’ve mainly been forgottenbut not by fan Emma Alice Johnson, who gives them the thoughtful, critical treatment they’ve been crying out for. Like many comic books of their time, they were violently sexist and casually misogynistic, but, unusually, their writersalso tackledqueer and feminist themes. Containingmore praise than Glenn Danzig has receivedin one publicationin many years, this exaltation of fandom and the complications of being a female Danzig and comics fan tackles many difficult questions and provides a fascinating glimpse into the comics industry of the nineties.
