Description

Vile were outsiders to an insular scene: kids from the Boston suburbs who decided to gain attention the easy way, by pissing people off. Their most legendary gig featured them opening for the Angelic Upstarts and Jerrys Kids in May of 1982 at Boston’s legendary Channel club, in which they insulted the audience, made off-color remarks, and allegedly threw a mic stand into the crowd. Following the gig, there was a lot of local controversy in zines and local publications about their set, to which the band responded by placing a half page ad in Boston Rock magazine that simply said, VILE SAYS FUCK OFF! The band played just a handful of other shows, and left behind the notoriously rare, self-financed “Solution” LP. The three songs contained on this 7″ were recorded during the LP sessions: “Overload” being previously unreleased, and “Definitions” and “5 To 10” being alternate versions to the LP cuts. These tracks are simple, raw, energetic, and pissed off hardcore songs made by alienated kids.

Our take: Well, this is exciting a 7 of unreleased stuff by Bostons Vile, handled by the people you want handling a reissue like this, Radio Raheem. Better yet, these are unreleased recordings from the same session as their legendary Solution LP. The a-side, Overload, is presumably an outtake from the LP as its never been released before. Even though the band felt alienated from the Boston scene (and baited its members relentlessly), they still sound very much of a piece with it. Overload in particular sounds like SSDs bulldozer hardcore married with the FUs snotty vocals. As for the two tracks on the b-side, theyre Definitions and 5 to 10, two of the bands best songs. (I think I remember Government Warning covering the latter and getting a huge reaction.) The back cover lists them as alternate versions, so maybe theyre different takes from the same session as the LP versions. While the EP is short and two of the songs are familiar, this is the only Vile vinyl you can get your hands on even the 2004 reissue of Solution on Parts Unknown is hard to find these days. The EP also looks and sounds great and includes archival context as weexpect from Radio Raheem.
